Amazon develops Bass Reeves series from Morgan Freeman, The Falcon & The Winter Soldier Writer

The Bass Reeves series is in development at Amazon. By deadline (via wrap), streamer evolves Twin Territories From Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment production company. The script will be written by Yadullah creator Ben Watkins and The Hawk and the Winter SoldierWriter Joseph Sawyer. Watkins will act as the exhibitor along with Leonard Chang. The film will be produced by Freeman, McCreary, Watkins, Malcolm Spellman, James Pickens Jr., and Scott Frank.

According to the report, Twin Territories He will follow Reeves, the United States’ first black Vice Marshal as he tackles Irish Chauncey Lee with the task of bringing the rule of law to the West while dealing with outlaw bandits, indigenous cultures, and settlers. The series is said to examine the methods Reeves used to achieve justice as well as the role he played in shaping the state of Oklahoma.

The series is something Freeman has been working towards for nearly three decades and a story he says is an opportunity to “straighten” some history.

I grew up in the movies watching everything, especially Westerns, and one of the things that really bothered me was the fact that if you’re black in one of those Westerns, you better be a comedian. “It’s better to be funny,” he says. [Black] Heroes, and this isn’t American history at all, so there’s an opportunity to bring that back, to straighten out some of the kinks of history.”

It was announced earlier this year that Paramount+ is also working on its own series, 1883: The Bass Reeves Story. The series is set to star David Oellow as Bas Reeves with Yellowstone Innovative Franchise Producer Taylor Sheridan.
